Crossroad reproduces Nizo Yamamoto’s background painting for Scene No. 42-2 of Mamoru Hosoda’s The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006).

The suburban Y junction is a recurring setting in the film. As Makoto repeatedly leaps through time and becomes increasingly uncertain about the consequences of her choices, the branching road takes on a symbolic role. The crossroads becomes a direct visual expression of her inner state.

Yamamoto constructed the composition as a cinematic space designed to guide the viewer’s eye. Although the road divides into two directions, perspective, architecture, cloud formations and light draw the gaze deep into the scene. The original background was painted as a bright daytime landscape. For the finished film, its appearance was subsequently transformed through digital compositing to create the evening atmosphere required by the script.
