Evening Primroses reproduces Nizo Yamamoto’s background painting for Scene No. 3-38 of Isao Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies (1988).

Pale evening primroses emerge from the deep darkness of the night, their blossoms appearing almost luminous. Yamamoto deliberately enlarged the petals beyond their natural proportions, giving the flowers a stronger presence within the composition.

The choice of motif carries a particular significance. In Japan, evening primroses are traditionally associated with melancholy and with waiting for someone. They open at dusk and wilt by morning. Within Grave of the Fireflies, this fleeting existence becomes a powerful image of transience.
