This is the official catalog for the exhibition "Cityscapes in Anime Background Art" held at the Yoshiro and Yoshio Taniguchi Museum of Architecture in Kanazawa, Japan from 17 June to 19 November 2023.

The catalog features exclusive interviews by Stefan Riekeles with the art directors of "AKIRA," "Ghost in the Shell," "Patlabor - The Movie”, “Patlabor 2 - The Movie”,  "Metropolis," and "Tekkonkinkreet”.
Furthermore the catalog presents photographs of the exhibition’s installation and exhibits. As such it is a valuable resource for all fans of the art of anime background painting.

Most parts of the text are bilingual (Japanese and English), except the chronology and the list of works.

The featured works are all representative Japanese science fiction creations produced during the transition from hand-drawn to digital animation. How was the imaginative world of these works, which carry a critical perspective on the rapidly changing landscapes and cities of Japan during its period of economic growth, constructed?

In the exhibition, the world of background art is unraveled from a multifaceted perspective. In addition to reference materials such as books and location scouting photographs that were actually used, the world of background art is explored through two timelines, one for architecture and one for anime, as well as interviews with art directors.

In addition to the interviews the catalog includes essays by anime researcher Stefan Riekeles and architecture critic Taro Igarashi, as well as columns by archive researcher Hiroko Myokam.
